For over 30 years Aveda has been committed to environmental and social improvement and this is a cornerstone of our corporate culture. From caring for the farmers who grow our ingredients around the world to providing community grants and implementing company-wide fundraising efforts, Aveda is proud to care for the people we touch and the planet we live on.
During the month of April, the Aveda network works together to raise funds for grassroots organisations that protect biodiversity and address environmental issues around the world. The Earth Month campaign focuses on a specified environmental topic each year, helping to raise awareness around the issue, cultivate and educate supporters, and contribute funds to dedicated non-profit conservation organisations.
Since 1999, our global network has raised over $14 million for Earth Month projects. The 2010 Aveda UK campaign raised £115,000 which supported WaterAid and Global Greengrants Fund projects around the world.
DID YOU KNOW?It costs WaterAid, on average, just £15 to reach one person with lasting access to a supply of safe water and sanitation, which means that Aveda's support could help us reach over 5,300 people!
Global Greengrants are Aveda's global Earth Month partner, a world leader in providing small grants to grass roots environmental groups around the world. Over the last four years, Aveda has made a remarkable commitment to protecting clean water and water rights through their limited edition
Light the Way™ candle.100% of the sales price goes to support communities and clean water projects in the countries where Aveda sources their ingredients.
We also support WaterAid whose mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world's poorest communities. Since 1981 they have reached over 14 million people with access to safe water. Aveda's employee fundraising activity throughout Earth Month has enabled local communities in Nepal and Ethiopia gain access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation.
WaterAid is a registered charity numbers 288701 (England and Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland).
As a result of Earth Month 2010 Aveda raised over £80,000 to support WaterAid which is enough to fund the following items:
In Nepal: 5 toolkits that maintained a village water point
3 rainwater harvesting systems that provided clean water for 200 children
1 gravity flow scheme that brought clean water to 100 households
27 hand-pumps for village wells
Created a hygiene promotion puppet show for children in Nepal
3 school sanitation blocks now used by 200 children
15 composting toilets
In Ethiopia:
47 locally manufactured rope pumps
Training for 25 pump attendants
100 hygiene promotion manuals
7 village water points have been restored
Materials that dug 20 wells
Spring protected that now serves clean drinking water for nearly 1000 people
80 Bags of cement that produced latrine slabs
For 2011 our fundraising will continue to support WaterAid projects in Ethiopia and Nepal, where extreme poverty is widespread and millions of people lack access to clean safe water, hygiene and sanitation. As a result, water-related diseases are rife and child mortality is high. WaterAid works with local communities to implement sustainable, affordable and appropriate water and sanitation solutions.
For Earth Month 2011 our focus will be on helping to provide access to clean water and sanitation for children and families around the world. In the developing world unsafe water, poor sanitation and bad hygiene spread diarrhoeal diseases that are fatal and keep millions of children out of school and families out of work. Children often suffer the most from a lack of clean, safe water so they are our focus for Aveda Earth Month this year.
We will again also be selling the
Light the Way™ candle to support Global Greengrants. 100% of the sales price goes to support communities and clean water projects.
